Coconut oil has become quite a rave with how beneficial it is for our dogs. It is considered the cleanest of oils used for food.
On a chemistry level, coconut oil contains high amounts of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT’s). A fatty acid that has anti fungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties. Coconut oil is considered a healthy fat because it contains a high amount of fatty acids. Even though this is scientifically seen as a fat, it contains tons of health benefits for our dog(s).
Benefits of coconut oil:
-Gives dogs more energy
-Helps create a cushion for joints to decrease arthritis pain
-Improves bowel function
-Improves skin health
-Reduces allergy flare ups
-Aids in weight loss
The most dog friendly coconut oil is the unrefined virgin or organic. Those tend to have higher levels of the fatty acids mentioned earlier called, MCT’s, thus healthier for our dogs.
Coconut oil can be given in the form of a treat, which is why at Maxx's Munchery we use it in our treats because we believe in using the best and most wholesome ingredients. Some of our treats that contain coconut oil are available in our online store such as: Coconutty Carob, Peanut Butter Carob, Cinna Pawmpkin and we are currently working on using coconut oil in more treats as we grow.
As always, talk with your veterinarian about adding coconut oil to your dogs diet.
